Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team received double-digit point totals from four of their five starters, including Derrick James' 1,000th career point, enroute to a 104-74 rout of Molloy University on Wednesday evening at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium.
STAC moves to 9-10 overall and 6-2 in ECC play, while Molloy falls to 3-14 and 3-4.
Starrell Hearns led the way for St. Thomas Aquinas with a team-high 25 points, while teammates Derrick James (16 points), Jordan Green (11 points) and Joshua Michigan (11 points) posted double figures in scoring to boot. Chase Timberlake led all Lions' scorers by tallying 26 points of his own.
STAC shot 51.2 percent (42-82) from the field, while Molloy shot 44.6 percent (29-65) from the floor.
STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Eleven Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Derrick James led the maroon and gold with 13 assists on the night.
- Starrell Hearns hit 10 of his 18 field goal attempts, with 4-of-10 shots falling from long range. He also went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Derrick James went 7-for-14 from the floor and 2-of-4 from three.
- STAC out-rebounded Molloy by a 42-39 count, with Starrell Hearns also grabbing a game-high nine boards for the Spartans.
- St. Thomas Aquinas swiped 11 steals, with the Lions turning the ball over on 25 separate occasions.
- The Spartans earned advantages in four team statistical categories over Molloy: Points off Turnovers (32-13), Second Chance Points (8-2), Points in the Paint 58-40 and Bench Points (32-5).
- The game featured three ties and no lead changes.
- STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under five minutes to play in Wednesday's contest, when the Spartans led by 35 points, 96-31, on a Starrell Hearns three-point jump shot.
- St. Thomas Aquinas led Molloy, 50-34 going into the halftime locker room and shot 42.9 percent (18-42) from the field and 41.2 percent (7-17) from beyond the arc.
- Starrell Hearns led all scorers with 16 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 54.5 percent from both the floor (6-of-11) and 50.0 percent (3-for-6) from downtown.
- STAC's best shooting half came in the second stanza, as the Spartans shot 60.0 percent (24-40) from the field.
- Derrick James became the 42nd member of the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team to hit the 1,000 career point mark when he hit a three-point jumper with 5:21 to play in the second half.
MOLLOY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Seven Lions logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Chase Timberlake led Molloy with 26 points, while Manu Alford (15 points) and Chris Stokel (14 points) also scored in double figures.
- Stokel also led Molloy with six assists on the evening.
- Timberlake went 11-for-18 from the floor. Meanwhile, Alford went 7-for-10 from the field.
- Jared Weakly and Chase Timberlake grabbed a game-high nine boards for the Lions.
- Molloy picked up five steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on ten separate occasions.
- Chase Timberlake led all Lions' scorers with 10 first half points, while shooting 50.0 percent (4-of-8) from the field.
- Molloy's best shooting half also came in the second stanza, as the Lions shot 45.7 percent (16-35) from the floor.
