Sparkill, N.Y. - Returning to the hardwood to resume Saturday's suspended contest with the College of Staten Island, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team received double-digit point totals from four of their five starters in a thrilling 108-105 victory on Wednesday evening at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium.
STAC improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 within ECC play, while CSI falls to 6-4 and 1-1.
Starrell Hearns led the way for St. Thomas Aquinas with a game-high 25 points, while also eclipsing the 1,000 career point mark. Teammate William Landram II also dropped 25 points, while Derrick James (18 points) and Joshua Michigan (12 points) posted double figures in scoring to boot. Eric Tynes led all Dolphins scorers by tallying 21 points.
STAC shot 53.9 percent (41-76) from the field and 80.0 percent (16-20) from the free-throw line, while CSI shot 55.1 percent (43-78) from the floor and 80.0 percent (8-10) from the foul line.
STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Nine Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Derrick James led the maroon and gold with seven assists on the night.
- Starrell Hearns hit 10 of his 14 field goal attempts, with 3-of-5 shots falling from long range. He also went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, William Landram II went 8-for-15 from the floor, 4-of-9 from three and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
- Staten Island out-rebounded STAC by a 38-33 count, with Starrell Hearns and Michael Parrotta grabbing a team-high six boards apiece for the Spartans.
- St. Thomas Aquinas swiped ten steals, with the Dolphins turning the ball over on 14 separate occasions.
- The Spartans earned an advantage in one team statistical category over Staten Island: Points off Turnovers 22-12.
- The game featured two ties and four lead changes.
- STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under 16 minutes to play in Wednesday's contest, when the Spartans led by 14 points, 79-65, on a Joshua Michigan layup.
- St. Thomas Aquinas led Staten Island 62-51 going into the halftime locker room and shot 55.0 percent (22-40) from the field and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the foul line.
- William Landram II led all scorers with 19 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 60.0 percent from both the floor (6-of-10) and from downtown (3-of-5). He also shot 80.0 percent from the free-throw line.
- Starrell Hearns became the 41st member of the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team to hit the 1,000 career point mark when he sank a pair of free throws with 15:18 to play in the first half.
STATEN ISLAND NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Seven Dolphins logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Eric Tynes led Staten Island with 21 points, while Asa Kone (20 points), Aaron Goldstein (20 points), JJ Chestnut (14 points), Brandon Torres (13 points), Andrew Benedict (13 points) also scored in double figures.
- Chestnut also led Staten Island with seven assists on the evening.
- Tynes went 8-for-14 from the floor and 4-of-8 from distance. Meanwhile, Kone went 9-for-13 from the field.
- Asa Kone also grabbed a game-high nine boards for the Dolphins.
- Staten Island picked up four steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on eight separate occasions.
- The Dolphins earned advantages in four team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Second Chance Points (17-12), Points in the Paint (58-46), Fastbreak Points (11-3) and Bench Points (30-20).
- CSI's largest lead of the game came with just under 12 minutes to play in the opening half, when the Dolphins led by five points, 24-19, on an Andrew Benedict jump shot.
- Eric Tynes led all Dolphins scorers with 14 first half points, while shooting 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the field and 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from beyond the arc.
- Staten Island's best shooting half also came in the second stanza, as the Dolphins shot 56.4 percent (22-39) from the field and 80.0 percent (4-5) from the free-throw line.
