Queens, N.Y. - Hot shooting by the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team pushed their current win-streak to three games with a 107-72 thrashing of Queens College on Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
STAC gets back to the .500 mark at 10-10 overall, while improving to 7-2 in ECC action. Meanwhile, Queens falls to 6-13 and 2-6.
Starrell Hearns led the way for St. Thomas Aquinas with a game-high 27 points, while teammates Anthony Daley (20 points), Igor Gonzalez (16 points) and Derrick James (13 points) posted double figures in scoring to boot. Dontae Prescott led all Knights' scorers by tallying 19 points of his own.
STAC shot a scorching 55.2 percent (37-67) from the field and 52.4 percent (11-21) from downtown, while Queens shot 43.5 percent (27-62) from the floor.
STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Eleven Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Derrick James led the maroon and gold with six assists on the day.
- Starrell Hearns hit 9 of his 15 field goal attempts, with 4-of-6 shots falling from long range. He also went 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Anthony Daley went 7-for-10 from the floor and 4-of-5 from three.
- STAC out-rebounded Queens by a 41-30 count, with Igor Gonzalez grabbing a game-high eight boards for the Spartans.
- St. Thomas Aquinas swiped ten steals, with the Knights turning the ball over on 18 separate occasions.
- The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Queens: Points off Turnovers (24-10), Second Chance Points (16-7), Points in the Paint (48-42), Fastbreak Points (25-19) and Bench Points (55-34).
- The game featured no ties and no lead changes.
- STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under six and a half minutes to play in Saturday's contest, when the Spartans led by 41 points, 91-50, on an Anthony Daley layup.
- St. Thomas Aquinas led Queens, 55-24 going into the halftime locker room and shot 54.3 percent (19-35) from the field and 53.8 percent (7-13) from beyond the arc.
- Starrell Hearns led all scorers with 18 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 60.0 percent from both the floor (6-of-10) and 66.7 percent (4-for-6) from downtown.
- STAC's best shooting half came in the second stanza, as the Spartans shot 56.3 percent (18-32) from the field.
QUEENS NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Nine Knights logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Dontae Prescott led Queens with 19 points, while Lleyton Fried (12 points) and Tahj-Malik Campbell (10 points) also scored in double figures.
- Campbell also led Queens with four assists on the afternoon.
- Prescott went 4-for-9 from the floor, 3-of-5 from three and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Fried went 5-for-8 from the field.
- Henri Mennander grabbed a team-high seven boards for the Knights.
- Queens picked up five steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on ten separate occasions.
- Dontae Prescott led all Knights' scorers with seven first half points, while shooting 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from the field, 50.0 percent (1-of-2) from three and 100.0 percent (2-for-2) from the foul line.
- Queens' best shooting half also came in the second stanza, as the Knights shot 52.9 percent (18-34) from the floor.
