Staten Island, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team earned its second straight win of the young season, an 88-77 decision over Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday afternoon at the College of Staten Island Tournament of Heroes.
STAC improves to 2-2 overall, while So. Conn. falls to 1-1.
Luis Risquez posted a double-double, with 19 points and 15 rebounds for the maroon and gold, while teammate Shaun Arnold recorded a game-high 27 points. Tyshon Judge (22 points) and Hartnel Haye (10 points) also contributed to the Spartans' totals.
STAC shot 48.5 percent from the field (33-68), while So. Connecticut State shot 39.2 percent (29-74) from the floor.
STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Eight Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the non-conference contest.
- Zion Ruckard led the maroon and gold with three assists on the afternoon.
- Shaun Arnold hit 12 of his 15 field goal attempts. Meanwhile, Tyshon Judge went 7-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
- STAC out-rebounded Southern Connecticut State by a 47-32 margin, with Luis Risquez grabbing a game-high 15 boards for the Spartans.
- St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 10 steals, with the Owls turning the ball over on 16 separate occasions.
- The Spartans earned advantages in three team statistical categories over So. Connecticut State: Point off Turnovers (13-10), Second Chance Points (17-9) and Points in the Paint (60-34).
- The game featured four ties and 11 lead changes.
- STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under eight minutes to play in the first half, when Spartans led by 12 points, 23-11 on a Tyshon Judge jumper.
- St. Thomas Aquinas held a 40-32 advantage going into the halftime locker room.
- Tyshon Judge led the Spartans with 12 first half points, while shooting 67.0 percent (4-of-6) from the floor.
- Shaun Arnold tallied 21 of his 27 points in the second half, on 10-of-12 shooting (83.3 percent).
SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- All nine Owls logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Antonio Chandler led So. Connecticut State with 20 points, while teammates Sean James (14 points), Isaac Hester (13 points) and Albert Vargas (13 points) also posted double-digit point totals.
- Vargas led So. Conn. with nine assists on the day.
- Antonio Chandler went 9-for-15 from the floor, with Sean James hitting 6 of his 12 field goal attempts.
- Chandler also grabbed a team-high 12 boards for the Owls.
- Southern Connecticut State picked up five steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 15 separate occasions.
- So. Conn. earned advantages in two team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Fastbreak Points (12-8) and Bench Points (12-8).
- So. New Hampshire had its largest lead in the game (five points, 5-0) with just under 18 minutes to play in the opening half.
- Antonio Chandler led the Owls with 12 first half points, while shooting 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the field.
