STAC and Holy Family Trade Wins in Saturday Baseball Doubleheader

Aston, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team returned to the diamond at the Maplezone Sports Institute on Saturday, wrapping up their four-game weekend series with Holy Family University. STAC earned a 4-2 win in the opener to run its win streak to eight games, before dropping the nightcap to the Tigers, 5-4.

STAC moves to 9-2 on the young season, while Holy Family goes to 5-10.

Game 1: 4-2 STAC

St. Thomas Aquinas opened strong and held off a mid-game push from Holy Family to secure a 4–2 win on Saturday.

Early Spark

St. Thomas Aquinas jumped ahead immediately in the top of the 1st inning.

  • C.J. Cumbo launched a solo home run to left field to open the scoring.

  • Later in the inning, Charlie Cordisco drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run, giving the Spartans a 2–0 lead.

Adding On

The Spartans extended their advantage in the 4th inning when Anthony Dimarco delivered an RBI single through the right side, scoring Nick Oelcher and making it 3–0.

Holy Family Responds

Holy Family cut into the lead in the bottom of the 4th.

  • Nick Lombardo drove in a run with a groundout.

  • Peter Hrousis followed with an RBI single to left, bringing the score to 3–2.
    Both runs were unearned due to defensive miscues.

Insurance Run

St. Thomas Aquinas added a key insurance run in the 6th inning when Tyler Haydt singled down the left-field line to score Cumbo, pushing the lead to 4–2.

Game 2: 5-4 STAC

Holy Family walked off St. Thomas Aquinas in the second game of Saturday's matchup, scoring in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 5–4 victory. 

Early Surge by Holy Family

Holy Family struck quickly in the 1st inning, taking advantage of walks and defensive miscues.

  • Andres Rivera drove in the first run on a fielder's choice.

  • A throwing error allowed another run to score.

  • Peter Hrousis followed with an RBI single, giving the Tigers an early 3–0 lead.

They added another run in the 2nd inning when Brayden King singled through the right side to bring home Frank Provenzano, extending the lead to 4–0.

Spartans Rally in the Third

St. Thomas Aquinas answered in the 3rd inning thanks to a clutch swing from C.J. Cumbo. With the bases loaded, Cumbo ripped a three-run double down the left-field line, scoring Ryan Hillery, Nick Oelcher, and Matthew Podesta to cut the deficit to 4–3.

Late-Inning Drama

The Spartans tied the game in the top of the 7th when Cumbo delivered again, lifting a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Charlie Cordisco to even the score 4–4.

But Holy Family answered immediately in the bottom of the inning. With runners on base, Peter Hrousis lined a walk-off RBI single up the middle, scoring Jephson Hadson-Taylor and sealing the 5–4 win.
