Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team closed out their four-game East Coast Conference series with the College of Staten Island on Monday afternoon by dropping a 9-2 decision at Clover Stadium.
STAC loses three-of-four contests with the Dolphins, and falls to 10-26 overall and 5-11 in ECC action, while CSI moves to 15-24 and 9-7.
A relatively quiet first two innings in Pomona devolved into an offensive outburst for Staten Island, as the visitors posted six runs in the third to take over the game at 6-0. The Spartans answered with an RBI ground out via Michael Zeis in fourth, which scored teammate Kyle DeCresce to make it 6-1.
CSI then answered with three more runs over the sixth and seventh innings to increase their advantage to 9-1, before a bases loaded walk to Zeis allowed DeCresce to once again make his way home to close the scoring at 9-2.
Tom O'Neill (L, 2-5) got the start for the maroon and gold and lasted just four and a third innings. O'Neill surrendered six runs on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout to be tagged with the loss. Relievers John Dezago and Kyle Rogers were each summoned from the bullpen to complete the final four and two-thirds innings of work, with the duo allowing two runs on three hits while walking five and fanning four.
The Spartans next head out on the road, facing East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Creekview Park in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
