The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team dropped a 7-2 contest in a non-conference game at Adelphi University. The Spartans remain winless on the season, falling to 0-6 overall while Adelphi stands at 2-0 on the season.
STAC's pitching struggles continued into Sunday's game, with the Panthers plating four runs in the home first and adding to more in the second. Tyler Patane started for the Spartans but retired just one batter before yielding to Scott Hannon as AU built their first inning advantage. The Spartans scored a single run in the fourth on a Chris Ruiz RBI single, and added another in the sixth on a run-scoring ground out by Ruiz, with Michael Morgan scoring both runs.
That was as close as the Spartans were to get, as Adelphi added an insurance tally in the seventh to round out the scoring. Patane took the loss as the offense scattered just four hits, while the Panthers were led by Lawrence Cicileo's three hits and two RBI, and Josh Rovner picking up the win in relief.
The Spartans will look to get on track with a nine-game road swing through North Carolina and Virginia, running from March 8 thru 16. They will play six games as the USA National Baseball Center in Cary, North Carolina, opening against Mansfield University on Friday, March 8, before playing the final three against Bloomsburg in Colonial Heights, Virginia, on March 15 and 16.
