STAC Baseball Drops Twin-Bill to Bloomsburg, 5-2 and 13-7

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team suffered its first losses of the season, dropping both ends of a double-header to Bloomsburg University, 5-2 and 13-7, in Colonial Heights, Virginia. The Spartans, who entered the weekend ranked #5 in the NCBWA national poll, fell to 4-2 overall, with Bloomsburg improving to 5-1.

STAC jumped on top in the opener via an Andrew Shkrelja solo home run in the top of the 2nd, but Cole Swigger doubled in the tying marker in the home 3rd for the Huskies. Chris Cepeda started strong for the Spartans but ran into trouble in the middle innings, as Chad Cooperman brought in the go-ahead run with a double in the 4th. Bloomsburgh knocked Cepeda from the box in the 5th on the strength of an Andrew Holmes two-run homer, making the tally 4-1.

A solo shot from Giovanni Dingcong - his third of the young season - cut the margin to 4-2 in the 6th, bu the Huskies grabbed it back in the bottom half on Austin Edgette's run-scoring single, and BU's bullpen did the rest to close out the decision. Christian Allegretti was impressive from the STAC bullpen, working the final 2.2 innings in scoreless fashion. Cepeda was tagged with the loss for St. Thomas Aquinas, while Ashton Raines improved to 2-0 in picking up the win.

Runs were plentiful in Game Two, with Bloomsburg jumping on top on a pair of unearned runs in the visiting 2nd, only to see STAC answer in the bottom half on Juan Adorno's two-run homer. The Huskies knocked Spartans starter Anthony Shkrelja out of the box in the 3rd, reeling off four straight singles with two outs, and Ben Newbert's two-RBI single off reliever Scott Hannon opened up a 6-2 gap. STAC got one back on the home half, with Dingcong reaching on a single, stealing second, and scoring on Vincent Timpanelli's base hit to cut the score to 6-3.

Bloomsburg broke the game open with with a six-hit outburst in the 5th, with Kyle OFier's triple bringing home a pair in a five run rally to make the tally 11-3. The Spartans did challenge by pushing across three in the bottom of the 6th, with RBI singles from Dillon Tyler and Joey Pena combining with a Dingcong sac fly to draw to 11-6, but the Huskies tacked on two more in the 8th to offset a lone STAC run in the 9th to secure the sweep.

Adorno led the offense with a 3-for-5 showing with a double and a homer, and Pena and Dingcong added two hits each for STAC. Shkrelja's loss was his first decision of the season, with JJ Sperhley improving to 2-0 with the win.

The teams return to action on Sunday for a double-header rematch in Colonial Heights, Virgina, closing out the Spartan's weekend trip.
