St. Thomas Aquinas College's St. Jacob Diodonet and Rickssen Opont were named the East Coast Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week respectively on Monday, after the Spartans third place finish at the Southern Connecticut State University Elm City Challenge this past weekend.
On the track, Diodonet took first a place finish in the 200 Meter Dash (22.27) and helped his team win the 4x400 Meter Relay (3:27.87). The junior sprinter from West Milford, NJ also finished second in the 400 Meter Dash (50.46) and took third in the 55 Meter Dash with a time of 6.49. However, Saint was not done for the day, as he also tried his hand at the Long Jump, where he finished with a jump of 6.39 meters.
In the field events, Opont finished first in the Shot Put (16.01 meters) and fourth overall in the Weight Throw (14.83 meters), breaking the school record for both events. The sophomore thrower from Nyack, NY has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships as a result of his impressive day in the cage.
The Spartans will next compete this Friday, December 8th at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY when Wagner College hosts the Seahawk Shootout.
