Senior Kristen Borriello of the Women's Cross Country team was the individual winner of the 2017 NJIT Highlander Challenge. The women and the men both finished in first place in the team categories.
Borriello covered the 5K course at Branch Brook Park in 18:27, which is only seconds off the Spartan 5K record that she set in 2015. Sophomore Aida Torpey also ran a great race finishing second overall. Her time of 18:33 was a personal best by almost one minute. Rebecca MacLeod, also a sophomore ran a personal record, finishing in 19:26 which was good for 8th place. Senior Kara Santa Teresa was next for the Spartans in 18th place in 20:17. Freshman Mary Dristle saw a big drop in time as she clocked a 21:40. Sophomore Grace Carter was the sixth Spartan to cross the line in 22:21. Rookie Kayla Cobelli also set a new personal best coming in at 22:47 in her second collegiate competition. This was the teams second 1st place finish of the 2017 season.
The men's team first place finish can be attributed to a few strong performances. Senior Vincent Vazquez finished in 4th place overall in 27:03. Freshman Nick Martello was next in 27:29 and finished in 8th place. Sophomore Aidan Russell stepped up for the Spartans with a 14th place finish in 28:49. Classmate Kyle Kondracki crossed the line in 28:52 followed by freshman Matt Tina (29:00). Senior Christian Diaz clocked a time of 29:47. Sophomores Stefan Saeed and Mich Philistin finished in 31:06 and 35:35 respectively. This is the second team victory for the Spartans this season.
The team will return to action in two weekas at the East Coast Conference Campionship hosted by NYIT.
