Spartan Runners Open at Fordham Fiasco

The STAC cross country team opened their season on Saturday at the Fordham Fiasco at Van Cotlandt Park.  Junior Sarah Callagy set the pace for the Lady Spartans as they placed second among the division II schools.  The men's squad was lead by Mike Galonski in his freshmen debut.

Callagy, who lead from the start, completed the 5K course in 20:14.  Freshman Keeley Bateman finished just two seconds later in her first collegiate competition which was good for 32nd place in the field of 165 runners. Juniors Chesea Klinger (21:04) and Lisa Brevogel (23:42) finished strong helping STAC to secure the second place finish.  Sophomore Carol Dugandzic completed her first collegiate 5K in 23:42 while Lauren Karpioch finished in 24:18.

In the men's 8K race, Galonski (27:51) started his career on the right foot.  He got out quick and was able to maintain a solid pace finishing in 40th place.  Graduate students Vinny Modafferi and Einar Brissing finished in 29:44 and 30:19 respectively.  A pair of freshmen rounded out the Spartan scorers as Matt Buell (31:27) and Mike Kraus (31:33) crossed the line.

The Spartan's will return to action on Saturday at the C.W. Post Invitational at 10:30 AM.  The race will be a preview of the conference championship course.
