STAC HARRIERS COMPETE AT HOFSTRA INVITATIONAL
Elmer Eckert paced the STAC men and Ashley Toscano was the top Spartan woman at the inaugural Hofstra Cross Country Invitational, held Saturday, Sept. 9 at Bethpage State Park in Bethpage, N.Y. The newly designed course encompassed the park’s polo field and wood-chip trails.
Eckert, a sophomore from the Bronx, N.Y., and Salesian High School, traversed the 5K (3.1-mile) course in 17 minutes, 14 seconds to finish 13th among Div. II-III runners and 39th overall. Fellow sophomore Andrew Gangemi (Staten Island, N.Y., St. Peter’s Boys School) placed 28th in Div. II-III and 64th overall in 18:52, while senior Anthony Hilliard (Stony Point, N.Y., North Rockland H.S.) wound up 37th in Div. II-III and 77th overall in 20:29.
In the women’s race, Toscano, a freshman from West Nyack, N.Y., and Clarkstown South H.S., finished 11th in Div. II-III and 52nd overall in 22:35, and Amanda Szorentini (Airmont, N.Y., Albertus Magnus H.S.) came across 20th in Div. II-III and 65th overall in 24:33.
The Spartans’ will travel to Van
Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on Saturday, Sept. 16, to participate
in the NYU Invitational.
