114th Penn Relays

In the 4 x 100 Relay the fast track team of Francis, Cirolia, Valentine & Muniz ran to a new school record of 43.66.  Freshman, Keith Francis led off with a sizzling 10.42.  Freshman, John Cirolia, running the second leg, hammered down the straightaway in 10.89.  Sophomore, Mike Valentine, the team's curve specialist, ran the third leg in 11.18.  While sophomore phenom, Chris Muniz sprinted down the final straightaway in 11.07.

In the 4 x 400 Relay the Spartan Striders were seeded in a regular heat instead of the CTC Championship race.  In spite of being out of medal contention, the team of Modaferri, Muniz, Valentine & Opoku were not deterred as they ran to a new outdoor school record of 3:21.88.

Sophomore Vinny Modafferi, the team's lead off specialist, started off the race by running the first 400 in a solid 51.14.  Sophomore sensation, Chris Muniz ran the second leg blasting out a 47.01, fastest leg ever by a STAC runner.  Following in the third leg was sophomore Mike Valentine who had a break out race by running a sizzling 49.99.  Sophomore Kwame Opoku managed to run a 52.60, while nursing a strained hamstring that came on at the 60 meter mark.  "If Kwame would have been able to run without being injured, who knows what the school record would have become, I believe it could have been in the 3:18 to 3:19 range" said Coach Billings.

The team will next be in action Saturday, May 3rd when they travel to Long Island for the Kings Point Invitational.  This will be the final team race of the season.  Following this race the team of Muniz, Modafferi, Valentine, Cirolia, Francis and Opoku continue on into the Championship season.  Competeing on the Women's side of the field is sophomore Jeanette Gibson who has also qualified for the New Balance NYC Qualifying Challenge on May 10th, as well as the IC4A/ECAC championship on May 17th at Princeton University.
