MUNIZ, GIBSON PACE SPARTANS AT BERGEN CC/NJIT MEET

 

Freshmen Chris Muniz and Jeanette Gibson continued their stellar spring seasons with a pair of noteworthy performances at the Bergen C.C./NJIT Invitational, held April 7 at Bergen Community College in Paramus, N.J.

 

The St. Thomas Aquinas men finished eighth in the team standings with 25.5 points, while the women placed seventh with 17 points.

 

Muniz (Suffern H.S./Suffern, N.Y.) established two more school outdoor records. He finished second in the 200-meter dash in 23.40 seconds, wiping away his one-week-old standard of 23.68, and also finished third in the 400 meters in 51.96 seconds, breaking the previous record of 52.17 set by Matt Winkeleer in 2005.

 

Gibson (North Rockland H.S./Pearl River, N.Y.) also added a pair of school outdoor records to her growing collection. She finished third in the javelin with a throw of 81 feet, 8 inches, snapping her old mark of 74-7 set last week at Trinity College. In the shot put, she finished tied for fourth with a best mark of 34-10, bettering her previous standard of 34-1 ½ set two weeks ago at West Point.

 

Sophomore Andrew Spanos (Burke Catholic H.S./Campbell Hall, N.Y.) won his section and finished eighth overall in the 1,500-meter run in 4:26.61, while fellow soph Rafael Ortiz (Spring Valley H.S./New City, N.Y.) came in second in his section and ninth overall in the 800 meters in 2:07.71.

 

Also for STAC, freshman Vin Modafferi (Clarkstown South H.S./New City, N.Y.) tied for 14th in the 200 (25.35) and placed 15th in the 400 (54.92); sophomore James Strysko (Suffern H.S./Hillburn, N.Y.) took 13th in the javelin with a school-record throw of 118 feet, 2 inches; sophomore Elmer Eckert (Salesian H.S./Bronx, N.Y.) finished 14th in the 1,500 meters in 4:36.51; Spanos clocked 2:22.81 for 24th in the 800; and sophomore Anderson Munro (St. John the Baptist H.S./Wyandanch, N.Y.) placed 28th in the 400 in 58.28.

 

The Spartans return to action April 15 at the New York Relays, held at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island.
