Spartans Release Inaugural Sprint Football Schedule
Sparkill, New York- (2/16/18) - Nearly two months after naming Matt Barry the Head Coach for the first-ever Sprint Football team at St. Thomas Aquinas College, the Department of Athletics is excited to announce the 2018 CSFL game schedule. In its inaugural season, the Spartans will open play against Post University at home on Saturday, September 15th, 2018 at 6:00pm. St. Thomas Aquinas will call the Torne Valley Sports Complex the home of the Spartan Football. This home game will begin the journey in the school's seven game Sprint Football regular season.
The Spartans, new members of the CSFL North division, will rival opponents including Army West Point, Cornell, Franklin Pierce and Post University, while the South Division includes Caldwell University, Chestnut Hill College, Mansfield University, Navy and UPenn. In the first season, the Spartans will not play South teams Navy and UPenn as the division cross-overs will rotate each season. The league wide bye week will come during Week 5 (Oct. 4th/5th) of the regular season, with the championship game being played November 11th between the winners of the South and the North Divisions. That game will be played at the home site of the team ranked overall number 1 headed into the playoff.
On September 15th, Coach Barry's Spartans will begin this historic season against a Post University team that has not been victorious since their 2014 campaign. This gives the CSFL's newest team an opportunity to generate excitement in Week 1. Following the first home contest, the Spartans will hit the road with stops at Caldwell University, Army, and Franklin Pierce University.
The Spartans will then return home for the first time since the mid-September to play host to the Ivy League's Cornell University. STAC will head back on the road in late October to face Chestnut Hill College before returning to Torne Valley the first weekend in November to conclude its inaugural CSFL regular season against Mansfield University.
"I am really enthusiastic for our first season of Sprint Football at St. Thomas Aquinas College. To be the only collegiate team in Rockland Country to have football is truly an honor and a privilege, and my team and I will work everyday to make our college, our fans, the community and the CSFL proud of the product we put forth, both on and off of the field" said Head Coach Matt Barry.
In December 2017, St. Thomas Aquinas College officially became the 10th member of the CSFL, which dates to World War II. The Collegiate Sprint Football League is a full-contact, intercollegiate, non-NCAA varsity sport which operates under the same rules as NCAA Division I football, but allows for a 65-man roster and observes a weight limit of 178 pounds of less. As the 10th member in the league, STAC, its Department of Athletics and the newly established sprint football program are excited to bring fun, enjoyable and competitive football to Rockland County!
Director of Athletics Gerry Oswald remarked "This is an exciting time to be a Spartan. The level of success that our athletic teams have seen over the last few years has put St. Thomas Aquinas on the map; locally, nationally and internationally. With the addition of Sprint Football, beginning this fall, the anticipation and enthusiasm of our recruits, coaches, alumni and college community has been off of the charts."
