The St. Thomas Aquinas College Club Ice Hockey team hit the ice on Sunday against the defending MCHC League Champion, Ramapo College, to open their 2017-2018 season.
The Spartans fell to defeat 10-4, against the Road Runners at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey, NY with throngs of fans from both sides in attendance for the first of two Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference contests this season.
STAC opened the scoring when forward Zachary Teats put in the net just 8:33 into the game. Defenseman James Ryan staked the Spartans to a 2-0 lead on a power play goal at 15:06 of the first period, which was the result after twenty minutes of play.
The second period was largely dominated by Ramapo, as they netted six goals in the stanza. However, the Spartans were not kept quiet, as Patrick Burns found the back of the twine twice to keep the score close at 6-4 Road Runners after two.
Ramapo was able to put the game away with four third period goals, as the defending champs ran their record to 1-0.
Spartan Goalie Carl Lorenz (L, 0-1) made his collegiate debut stopping 41 shots on net.
Shots on goal for the game were 33 for St. Thomas Aquinas and 51 for Ramapo College.
St. Thomas Aquinas will return to the ice next Sunday, October 1st, taking on Suffolk Community College in the Spartans home opener at Sport-O-Rama. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm, with pregame festivities to commence before the start.
