The St. Thomas Aquinas College Club Ice Hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to Hofstra University at Sport-O-Rama on Friday evening, in the first of two meetings between the MCHC combatants in the next seven days.
A quiet score sheet by both teams after one period of play changed in the middle stanza, as the visitors were able to strike with just under six and a half minutes remaining in the second period to make it 1-0. The Spartans were able to knot things up at one goal apiece, when Patrick Burns tallied with just over two minutes remaining in the period. However, the Pride regained the lead in the waning moments of the second, and took a 2-1 lead into the locker room.
In the third period, Hofstra was able to net three additional goals and the Spartans one, as Patrick Burns, again lit the lamp for STAC. Unfortunately for St. Thomas Aquinas, that was all of the offense they could muster on the night and the Pride skated away with the victory.
Spartan Goalie Carl Lorenz (L, 3-10-1) stopped 31 of 36 shots faced.
Shots on goal for the game were 34 for St. Thomas Aquinas and 36 for Hofstra.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow night, Saturday, February 3rd at Parkwood Ice Rink in Great Neck, NY against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point), with puck drop scheduled for 5pm. Following their matchup with Mariners, St. Thomas Aquinas will play the finale of their 2-game series with Hofstra University, this time at the Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park, on Wednesday, February 7th at 10pm.
