The St. Thomas Aquinas College Club Ice Hockey team closed out their 2017-2018 home schedule, falling to ACHA #12 ranked Ramapo College, 5-3. The MCHC contest was also the first-ever LIVE broadcast of a STAC Ice Hockey game on the Spartan Sports Network.
Before puck drop at Sport-O-Rama on Saturday evening, the Spartans took a few moments to honor their graduating seniors; Daniel Cremin & Ryan Griffin for the contributions that they have each made in their time with the program.
After the festivities had ended, St. Thomas Aquinas was ready to get down to business, but the visiting Roadrunners had other plans. Just under two minutes into the opening period, Kyle DeBel gave Ramapo an early 1-0 lead. However, just five and a half minutes later, the Spartans struck, as Douglas Harrison tied things up at one goal apiece on a breakaway off of a nice feed from captain Shaun Benson. Ramapo would then tally with just nine minutes remaining in the first, as Robert Spetz beat goalie Carl Lorenz to make it 2-1, a lead that would remain after one period of play.
The second period saw the Spartans quickly tie things up at two on a goal by newest team member Tyler Brooks at 18:51. Unfortunately, the Roadrunners would find the back of the net three more times in the middle stanza, as Robert Spetz would net his second and third goals of the evening, along with Kyle DeBel's second of the game, giving Ramapo College a commanding 5-2 lead after two.
In the final period, a large amount of time was spent killing off penalties by both teams, but the Spartans were able to get it to within a 2-goal game, as Jason Tom ripped a shot into the top righthand corner of the net, making it 5-3 Ramapo. St. Thomas Aquinas valiantly tried to tie up the game, as Head Coach Matt Schuster pulled his netminder, and went with six attackers for the final 1:10, however the buzzer sounded and the visiting Roadrunners were victorious on this night.
Spartan Goalie Carl Lorenz (L, 4-11-1) stopped 53 of 58 shots faced.
Shots on goal for the game were 30 for St. Thomas Aquinas and 58 for Ramapo.
The Spartans close out the 2017-2018 season on Sunday, as St. Thomas Aquinas takes on Columbia University at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY at 1pm, with doors opening for all spectators at 12:30pm.
