The St. Thomas Aquinas College Club Hockey team hit the ice on Friday evening against Stevens Institute of Technology to close out a three-game season opening homestand.

The Spartans fell to defeat 7-1, against the Ducks at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey, NY with dozens of fans from both sides in attendance for the first of two Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference contests between the schools this season.

Stevens Tech. opened the scoring when forward Alex Phipps put the puck into the net just six minutes into the game. A second goal by Phipps and a third by James Surless on the powerplay put the Spartans in a 3-0 hole at the end of twenty minutes of play.

The second period and third periods were largely dominated by the Ducks on the powerplay, as they netted three on the man-advantage and one at even strength. Two more goals by Alex Phipps and another two by Eamon Bontempo gave Stevens Tech a 7-0 advantage. STAC was able to get on the board in the waning moments of the game, as Zachary Teats broke the shutout with his fourth goal of the season.

Spartan Goalie Carl Lorenz (L, 1-2) stopped 39 of 46 shots faced.
