The St. Thomas Aquinas College Club Ice Hockey team took to the ice on Sunday against Suffolk County Community College, to open their 2017-2018 home schedule.
The Spartans fell to defeat 10-3, against the Sharks at Sport-O-Rama in Monsey, NY with dozens of fans from both sides in attendance for this Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference matchup.
Suffolk opened the scoring when forward Trevor Goess put the puck past STAC goalie Peter Gianatiempo just 1:45 into the game. The Spartans tied things up nine minutes later, as Zachary Teats scored an unassisted goal. However, the Sharks scored again midway through the period to give Suffolk a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.
The second period was largely dominated by Suffolk, as they netted four goals in the stanza, including two more goals by Trevor Goess, which gave the Sharks a 6-1 advantage after two periods of play.
STAC was able to climb back into the game in the third period on goals by Douglas Harrison and Shaun Benson, but Suffolk was able to put the game away with four third period goals, including a hat trick from Jake Dolitsky.
Spartan Goalie Peter Gianatiempo (L, 0-1) made his collegiate debut stopping 24 shots on net.
Shots on goal for the game were 23 for St. Thomas Aquinas and 34 for Suffolk County Community College.
St. Thomas Aquinas will return to the ice on Friday, October 6th at 8:30pm for Alumni Night, as the Spartans will host a friendly scrimmage against players from the program's past. On Sunday, October 8th, Columbia University will pay a visit to Sport-O-Rama for another MCHC match-up. Puck drop is scheduled for 8pm.
