Spartans Top Dowling, 61-56
The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team beat Dowling College, 61-56 in Saturday afternoon's contest. This was the second match-up of the two teams as the Spartans defeated the Lions by one earlier in the season. STAC was led by Chris Williams who scored fourteen points shooting 2-3 from behind the arc and 4-4 from the line. Williams was 4-6 from the field while adding two assists and two steals. Ahmed Allen added twelve points and five rebounds. Both Williams and Allen hit key free throws to hold off Dowling down the stretch.
The Spartans took a 13-11 lead off a dunk by freshmen Ra'Shad James and never looked back. James finished with eleven points for the second consecutive game. STAC took their largest lead of the game off a lay-up by Akeem Comas putting the Spartans ahead 33-20 with 5:25 remaining in the first half. Comas finished with ten points and team high eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
STAC maintained a single digit lead for the entire second half as Dowling would not let up. The Lions were led by David Seagers who had seventeen points and ten boards. Seagers converted on two free throws with 2:12 in the game pulling Dowling within three (53-50). However, Comas scored a layup while being fouled and made the free throw to keep it a two possession game with a minute and a half to go. STAC made 5-6 from the foul line to secure the win.
The Spartans have a full week of action as they return to their home court for three games. STAC will start the week off on Monday night as they face Northeast-10 opponent Assumption College. They will then host CW Post on Wednesday and Queens on Saturday.
