The St. Thomas Aquinas men's basketball team dropped a 61-52 decision to Northeast 10 opponent Assumption College. Pierre Gaspard finished with a team high eleven points shooting 5-6 from the field. Chris Williams and Vincent Johnson contributed nine points each while Brian Harnischfeger finished with team high six rebounds and five assists.
STAC took a two point lead (13-11) with 7:23 remaining in the first half off a three pointer by Shaun Weaver. Weaver finished with five points and a season high five assists. The Spartans maintained their lead throughout the half taking a 29-23 advantage into the break. The Greyhounds did not regain the lead until a three pointer by Greg Twomey with 13:16 to go in the game. Twomey finished with eleven points and a game high six assists. Assumption was led by Mike Baldarelli who scored twenty points while grabbing eleven rebounds. Patrick Shea added eleven points and eleven boards of his own.
Akeem Comas scored a layup with 10:17 to give STAC a one point advantage (45-44) but Assumption responded with a 9-1 run to put them ahead 53-46. The Spartans fought hard down the stretch as Harnischfeger connected on one of two free throws to pull them within four but STAC could not get any closer. Assumption outrebounded the Spartans 37-26. Both teams struggled from the line as the Greyhounds shot 8-13 over STAC's 4-11.
The Spartans will return to action against ECC opponent CW Post on Wednesday. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
