Spartans Finish as Runner Up at NCAA Regional; Advance to NCAA Championships

The St. Thomas Aquinas golf team finished in 2nd place at the  NCAA Atlantic/East Regional played at The Resort at Glade Springs, Daniels, West Virginia.  The Spartans will advance to the NCAA Championships played May 22-26, at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Florida.  Senior Brendan Hunter finished tied for 7th overall with three round scores of; 77, 73, 73.

Fellow senior Kevin Gately along with Michael Frizzalone tied for 22nd place overall in a field of more than 80 golfers. Gately had the Spartans lowest score of the tournament carding a 71 in the opening round. Frizzalone and Hunter each posted low team scores of 73 during round two.  Michael Miranda had his lowest round on day two carding a 74 while Hamish Houston also had his lowest score on day two with a 76.

The Spartans finished one stroke behind cross town rival Dominican College with a team score of 900. The Chargers were led by Leonard Lee who finished in 4th place overall guiding Dominican to a team winning score of 899.  The Spartans finished a couple of strokes ahead of the 3rd and 4th place finishers; Charleston and LeMoyne College, who will also advance to the finals.

STAC was the NCAA Regional winner last Spring which was the second time in the programs history they had won the regional.  This is the Spartans 7th trip to the NCAA Championships.
