The St. Thomas Aquinas men's golf team drop a few places after round two of the NCAA DII Men's Golf Championship. The Spartans started their round tied for 8th place and dropped four spots.
Senior Kevin Gately carded a 77 on day two after posting the low team score on day one with a 2-under, 68. Gately started his round tied for 8th place and is currently tied for 40th. Hamish Houston and Brendan Hunter each shot 74 which were the Spartans low scores for Tuesday.
Michael Miranda and Michael Frizalone each posted a 75 during their second round and sit among the top half of the field tied for 46th and 55th place. The Spartans are 25-over as a team while the leaders, Barry University are a 8-under.
Despite a great deal of shuffling throughout the day at Reunion Resort, the top five teams settled right back into the same positions they held at the end of round one, though Barry's lead over West Florida had increased to four shots. The 3rd-ranked Buccaneers and top-ranked Argonauts even had the two best scores again, with the Bucs turning in a two-under par 278, and the Argos checking in with an even-par 276.
The National Championships feature three rounds of stroke play, with one round each day, Monday through Wednesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. Pairings for the first two rounds are pre-determined, and the third round pairings will be based on team scores up to that point. The top eight teams then move on to match play and will be seeded one through eight based on their finish in the stroke play portion of the tournament.
The national quarterfinals are Thursday morning at 7:30, with the top seed playing against the eight seed, the second seed facing the seventh, the third seed facing the sixth, and the fourth seed facing the fifth. Golfers will compete head-to-head based on lineup position determined prior to the quarterfinals. Teams receive one point for each win by their individual golfers with a maximum of five points. The four winning teams Thursday morning will be right back on the course that afternoon for the national semifinals at 1:30, and the championship match is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m.
STAC will tee off for round three on Wednesday morning at 9:00 am.
