In the midst of their impressive 4-0 start, outscoring opponents Indiana University of PA, Jefferson University and 2017 National Champion West Chester University of PA a combined 28-14 this past weekend in Virginia, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team has maintained their #1 region ranking, but has moved up two spots to #5 nationally in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll, released on Wednesday.
Leading the way for STAC was the ECC Player of the Week Joseph Pena (Sr./SS/Bronx, NY), who got the season off to a strong start, reaching base safely at least twice in each of STAC's four victories in as many games. He batted .615 overall (8-for-13) with five walks (.737 obp), seven extra-base hits, nine runs scored and nine RBI, while also stealing five bases. His top performance came in a big win over former No. 2 (Now No. 15) ranked West Chester, in which he went 4-for-6 with seven RBI in STAC's 12-5 victory. He also added a 4-for-4 outing against Jefferson.
Spartan slugger Giovanni Dingcong (Sr./RF/Daly City, CA), picked up where he left off last season, hitting .357 (5-for-14) with 2 homers, five RBI and two runs scored on opening weekend.
In addition, ECC Rookie of the Week Christian Allegretti (Fr./LHP/Brooklyn, NY), had a memorable first appearance for the Spartans. The lefty entered STAC's game against West Chester with a 5-1 deficit and proceeded to toss 3.1 innings of two-hit shutout ball to earn his first collegiate win. He allowed just two singles, while walking none and striking out two in the Spartan's 12-5 victory.
Undefeated St. Thomas Aquinas returns to action this coming weekend, as the team hits the road once again, this time taking on Bloomsburg University (PA) in a four-game series down in Colonial Heights, Virginia. Doubleheader games between Spartans and Huskies will take place on both Saturday, March 3rd and Sunday, March 4th.
