St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball Shortstop Joseph Pena and Pitcher Christian Allegretti were named the East Coast Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week respectively on Monday, following the Spartans 4-0 sweep of their season opening road trip in Dinwiddie, Virginia.
Pena, the senior from Brooklyn, NY got the season off to a strong start for the No. 3/7 ranked Spartans, reaching base safely at least twice in each of STAC's four victories in as many games. He batted .615 overall (8-for-13) with five walks (.737 obp), seven extra-base hits, nine runs scored and nine RBI, while also stealing five bases. His top performance came in a big win over No. 2 ranked West Chester, in which he went 4-for-6 with seven RBI in STAC's 12-5 victory. He also added a 4-for-4 outing against Jefferson.
Allegretti, the freshman also from Brooklyn, had a memorable first appearance for the Spartans. The lefty entered STAC's game against West Chester with a 5-1 deficit and proceeded to toss 3.1 innings of two-hit shutout ball to earn his first collegiate win. He allowed just two singles, while walking none and striking out two in the Spartan's 12-5 victory.
Undefeated St. Thomas Aquinas returns to action this coming weekend, as the team hits the road once again, this time taking on Bloomsburg University (PA) in a four-game series down in Colonial Heights, Virginia. Doubleheader games between Spartans and Huskies will take place on both Saturday, March 3rd and Sunday, March 4th.
