Spartans Defeat Queens, 5-1
The St. Thomas Aquinas baseball team beat Queens College, 5-1 in their ECC opener. Sophomore RHP Robert Frank struck out 14 to the lead the Spartans to victory at the The Rock Sports Park in Chester, NY. Shortstop Andrew Ahn led STAC going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
The top four batters in the Spartan lineup collected eight hits and scored four runs. Lead-off hitter Nick Barbalato scored twice and swiped three bases. Outfielder Matt Smith went-3-for-4 and Vin Malzahn went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and two stolen bases. Second baseman Frank Salerno scored once and swiped two bases.
Frank sailed all of is eight innings except the 8th, but struck out consecutive Queens batters with the bases loaded to quiet the rally.Frank's 14 K performance follows his one-hit, 1-0 victory against the #2 team in the East Region, Franklin Pierce, last Thursday.
The Spartans will host Queens, back at The Rock for a double beginning at 12:00 tomorrow.
