SPARTANS SLAM 3 HOMERUNS, ROUT ADELPHI 16-1, TAKE ECC REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP

The Spartans bounced back from a pair of losses (4-2, 1-0) and scored 16 runs by the 4th inning, cruising to a 16-1 victory over Adelphi. Led by homeruns from Chris Zapata, John Mazzello, and Vin Malzahn, STAC racked up 14 hits. The scoring was started by Zapata's 1st inning grandslam. Malzahn hit a 3-run homer in the 3rd and Mazzello hit a 3-run homer in the 4th. Starting pitcher Anthony Russo never let Adelphi in the game as he went 5 innings, scatterd 3 hits, struckout 4 batters, and allowed a lone run in the 3rd. Pat Murray went 4-for-6 and scored 4 runs. Mazzello was 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs. Mike Triana went 1-for-2 and scored 3 runs.
The Spartans finished 17-10 in the ECC and tied with New Haven and Dowling for the regular season championship. Because of the tie-breaker procedure STAC was declared the regular season champion and will be seeded #1 at the East Coast Conference tournament which begins Friday May 9th in Brookhaven, NY.
The Spartans are back in action on Monday to take on Felician College, 3pm at Veterans Field in Orangeburg, NY. The senior spartans will be honored.
