Led by the big bats of Javier Diaz and T.J. Varricchio, St. Thomas Aquinas won the third and final game of the 3-game series over East Coast Conference foe Queens 14-2. With the win the Spartans secured the series sweep.
Diaz started the scoring with a 2-run blast in the 1st inning. In the second, John Muller ripped a 2-run double and Varricchio blasted a 2-run homer to give STAC an 8-0 lead. The Spartans continued their slugging in the 7th with Diaz hitting a 2-run double, followed by a Varricchio 2-run double.
For the game, the Spartans collected 15 hits. Muller went 3-for-5, with a double and 3 RBIs. Diaz went 2-for-6 with 5 RBIs, a double, and a homer. Varrichio went 3-for-4, with 4 RBIs, a double, and homerun. John Mazzello collected two more hits for his 21st consecutive game in which he has hit safely. Over the weekend Diaz and Varricchio combined for 3 doubles, 6 homeruns, and 19 RBIs.
Starting pitcher Joel Violette scattered 5 hits over 5 innnings to pick up the victory.
