Led by John Mazzello's (New Hyde Park, NY) 5-hit performance, the Spartans collected twenty-two hits and cruised to a 23-5 East Coast Conference victory today at Veteran's Memorial Field. Mazzello continued his hot hitting from last week in which he led all ECC hitters going 13-for-25 and hitting safely in all six games.
Other offensive standout performers included Javier Diaz (Dobson, NC) who went 4-for-5 with 5 RBIs and a solo homer in the 3rd inning. T.J. Varricchio (Ardsley, NY) smashed a 2-run triple and a 5th inning solo homer. Freshman, Vinny Malzahn (Port Jervis, NY) had a 2-run homer in the 5th as well, an inning in which the Spartans scored nine runs. Mike Triana (New Milford, NJ) had two hits and 3 RBIs. John Muller (Mahopac, NY) and Kevin Sharpe (East Meadow, NY) each had two hits and Kevin Spence (Port Jeff Stattion, NY) had a 2-run single. It is the second time this season the Spartans have scored more than twenty runs in a single game and they have won three of their last four ECC games.
Starting pitcher, Jeremiah Ferris (Walden, NY) went 5 innings, allowing 5 hits and no earned runs enroute to his third victory.
