The Spartan baseball team eclipsed the 3.0 GPA mark in the fall of 2007. It is the second straight fall semester they have accomplished the feat. Of the 27-member team, 17 players had a 3.0 or higher. Seven were freshmen. Eight of those seventeen had over a 3.5.
"We've consistently made academic excellence a focus and an expectation at St. Thomas, " said head coach Scott Muscat. "We strongly believe that a player's effort in the classroom translates to the field and into life after college. We mandate study hall for all freshman and upper-classmen with sub-standard grades. "
Outside of what individual coaches do to help their players, the college does an excellent job in offering academic resources, tutors, study skills tutelage, and writing workshops through The Center for Academic Excellence. The favorable 17 to 1 student/teacher ratio accomodates a student-center approach at STAC. The college also offers the Pathways Program for those students with documented learning disabilities.
